'Dating Rules from My Future Self' Fashion: Ep. 2 - 'What is Luv?'

It was hard to pick an outfit to feature from this episode of Dating Rules from My Future Self because Lucy's date outfit (a golden pleated-front satin blouse and emerald pencil skirt) was very stylish...unfortunately, it was hard to hunt for similar items! Here's her second outfit from the same episode: a cute printed dress and a contrasting red belt.

The bright red belt accentuates her waist and keeps her otherwise neutral outfit looking fresh. I think it's such a clever way to make an outfit a little more fun!

Pair a neutral printed dress (Lucy's has a geometric print, but I chose one with an adorable tiny deer print!) with a tan short-sleeved cardigan, and add a brightly colored belt around the waist. Finish with a pair of super tall suede wedges for a look that is both cute and work appropriate!

I just got this dress from Forever 21 (Heritage) with a gift card I got for Christmas. It makes me feel like a figure skater/ballerina/fancy party girl, and yet I wore it to work. The fabric is floaty (and also very sheer, so wear a slip!) and soft, so it's fun to twirl in. I wore a long boyfriend sweater over it and added my silver bow flats to make it a little more casual.

Here are the pieces I used from my 30 for 30 challenge:

30 for 30 Challenge

You've probably seen other fashion bloggers attempt the '30 for 30' challenge. I thought it would be fun to try. I haven't done any fashion blogger challenges and wanted to see how creative I could get with using just a fraction of my closet.

So...
30 days. 30 items. 30 different outfits.

I didn't think it would be that difficult to pick things...but it was! (Should I have included that black skirt with the ruffle? What about that blue top? Or the pink sandals?)

I tried to be practical. I have a lot of neutrals (because of my job), but tried to mix in a few colors. It'll be interesting to see what combinations I'll be able to come up with. Taking pictures of everything was extremely useful though! In fact, I've already mapped out a bunch of outfits (which is super helpful if you're visual/obsessive like I am). Accessorizing is free-for-all, so at least I'll be able to have some variety in my outfits.

I'm also going on a shopping fast. Just...no shopping. Nothing frivolous, at least. I'm going to see how much money I can save (it's just a shame I work at the mall--too tempting, ugh!).

S'mores! I'm so thankful that my mom bought a big 'ol s'mores kit from Costco. I'll have enough s'mores to last me for quite some time.

Also: I've found out the hard way that it is impossible to eat a s'more gracefully. I always end up with chocolate dribbling down my chin. Classy.

I've just been totally charmed by Dating Rules from My Future Self and was feeling inspired by Lucy's style. It's quirky-dorky-girlie, with a touch of vintage. Here's her outfit from the first episode, 'Who R U?'

I love the color combination in her outfit from this episode! The cream, yellow, and mustard work so well together because they're in the same color family. The pop of purple from her satchel is unexpected, but I like it.

Get the look:

1. Cardigan | 2. Lace Dress | 3. Cat-eye readers | 4. Purple satchel | 5. Skinny yellow belt

Wear a cream lace dress that's fitted at the natural waist and has a full skirt. Top it with a mustard yellow boyfriend cardigan and bold yellow skinny belt. For the finishing touches, add a purple satchel and Lucy's signature oversized cat-eye glasses. Add a little red lipstick and a cute bike, and you'll be all set!

I don't know why, but I often revert to the nautical look! I like sailor collars, stripes, and anchors, and I even enjoy mixing red, white, and blue together. I've only worn this dress once before--I had trouble thinking of different ways to wear it! I threw on a boyfriend cardigan and leggings, which is always an easy way to change up a dress.

Also, I decided to add a little collage feature to my outfit posts! From now on, I'll be linking to the items that I wear (or similar items) in case you're feeling inspired or just want to know where to find them. I hope this helps you in your fashion styling adventures.

I always look forward to viewing Sretsis' latest collection on Maximillia. Pim Sukhahuta's designs are fresh, feminine, and whimsical (and hey, she even interned for Marc Jacobs!). It's a shame the pieces are completely out of my price range, but it's still fun to pull inspiration from them.

The Spring/Summer 2012 (southern hemisphere's Autumn/Winter 2012) is full of clever Bambi-inspired deer print dresses, playsuits, and coats, as well as feminine lace details and colorful daisy appliques. Here are my favorite looks:

Polish Post: Monochromatic Blue

If you're feeling too lazy to try any complicated designs (like me) but still want your nails to look like you tried something, how about painting them monochromatic? Mix it up by using nail polishes in different finishes (I used glitter, shimmer, and solid) but sticking to the same hue (I used blue). It creates a look that is simple but still eye-catching.

Paint two coats of each shade (I used three for the glitter polish to make it opaque) and finish with a topcoat.

I haven't taken any outfit photos with sunglasses yet! I've had these Sabre Australia "Runaway" ones since last year and they're my absolute favorite. I'm a sucker for oversized cat-eye frames and immediately became obsessed when I saw these on Revolve. I entered a blog giveaway to win a pair and ultimately lost, so I finally gave in and bought a pair (I don't usually spend more than $10 on sunglasses, but I couldn't stop thinking about them!).

Shopping Tip: you can get 30% off your first purchase from Revolve Clothing if you e-mail customer service after ordering--I did this and they ended up costing about $70 USD.

I also switched to the Juicy Couture daydreamer satchel I got a few years ago. I can fit my whole life into that thing, and it's held up quite nicely.

Guilty pleasure of the moment: the Alloy web series Dating Rules from My Future Self. It stars a bunch of actors that used to be on WB dramas and is full of fluffy, girlie goodness.

Shiri Appleby plays Lucy, a dorky-cute 20-something in the midst of a life-altering relationship crisis--to get engaged or not to get engaged? With the help of her two best friends and mysterious texts from--you guessed it, her future self--she tries to sort out her life and figure out what she really wants.

Totally cheesy? Yes.
Totally cute? Also yes.

(and I kind of like her outfits. A lot.)

I've been trying to find different ways to wear a plain black blazer. One of my favorite ways to wear mine (erm. My mom's. I really should get my own) is to pair it with contrasting shorts (ooo, I love these! They have a big bow on the front) and patterned tights. I prefer fitted blazers/jackets over "boyfriend" styles--boyfriend blazers tend to look a little too boxy on me!

Ooo! I'm so excited for the Jason Wu and Target collaboration! There are so many pieces I can see myself wearing. The color palette is fresh, with pale blue, navy, coral, and white. The collection itself is very sophisticated and classic, with French and nautical influences. Think clean lines, pleats, boatnecks, and a few whimsical patterns thrown in.

Here are a few of my favorites:

The collection launches February 5th with everything under $60. I'm definitely eyeing the navy dress with stripes, the light blue pleated skirt, and the daisy satchel above. So much cuteness!

Just wanted to share a few more photos from my visit to the set of Pretty Little Liars! Aren't the girls' bedrooms amazing? I loved all the pillows and relaxed boho vibe of Aria's room, and the girliness of Hanna's. Spencer's bedroom was very sophisticated and organized (of course).

Photo Diary: Christmas 2011

Taken with my new Canon 50mm lens (a gift to myself). SO happy that the heart bokeh came out so well!

Just wanted to share a few photos from Christmas with my family! We have a few family traditions that we do every year, including giving each other a new ornament to add to the tree on Christmas Eve, and opening presents on Christmas morning. My sister (visiting from Chicago! Yay!) and I decided to give new pajamas to our parents too (a tradition we started just last year) so that everyone would have something new to wear in the morning.

We also had a Christmas party the day of, with my grandparents and a bunch of uncles, aunts, and cousins. We ate a lot of food and just had a good time.

Ruche always seems to have the prettiest things! I couldn't resist getting this blouse and a pair of bow shorts a few weeks ago.

When I wore it to work, I accidentally got a little bit of Nutella on it (from the crepe my co-worker let me try. It was delicious, by the way)! Why is it I only get stains on my clothes when they're white and very noticeable? Boo.

I'm finally getting a haircut tomorrow!
Nothing drastic/adventurous--I'm not ready for anything crazy just yet, but it is definitely much needed. I haven't had a haircut since July (!) and I have tons of split ends I need to take care of.

A Pretty Little (Liars) Photo Post

Me, on the set of Pretty Little Liars

Earlier this month, me and a few other bloggers were invited to visit the set of Pretty Little Liars for a stylish evening with the show's costume designer, Mandi Line. I've been a fan of the show (and books!) for a while now, so I couldn't wait to see everything in person. It was my first time visiting a television show set and didn't know exactly what to expect, but I had so much fun! We learned a lot about each character's personal style, and even where they shopped.

After Mandi's fashion lesson (how appropriate, since all us bloggers were sitting in the desks!), we got a surprise visit from Ian Harding, who plays Ezra Fitz on the show (eeee!). He was super gracious and had something nice to say to everyone.

Then Aaron Robberson, one of the show's set dressers, took us for a tour around the girls' bedrooms. The only one we didn't get to see was Emily's, which was a shame because I always thought her room was the prettiest! It was so cool to see everything up close though--all the little details and things in the background that you don't really notice help bring the story alive.

Polish Post: Candy Cane Nails

I don't usually like posting nail polish posts one after the other, but I wanted to put this up in time for the holidays!

I did red with white stripes last year too, but was inspired by Syl and Sam's double-striped candy cane nails in one of their latest tutorials. Fairly easy, and the effect is fun and reminiscent of my favorite holiday candy. They look good enough to eat! ;D

I used two coats of red polish, carefully painted diagonal white stripes, and finished with one coat of gold glitter for some sparkle (Essie's "Golden Nuggets"--just scored it from a white elephant gift exchange!).

Polish Post: Baby Blue & Black Scalloped French Tips

Pop Beauty's "Baby Blue" with black French scalloped tips

I got a few Pop Beauty polishes when they were on sale at Hautelook a few weeks ago. It's one of my favorite nail polish brands because the colors are really opaque and never go on streaky. The color selection is great too! They have a lot of unconventional colors, with a bunch of glitters, neons, pastels, and metallics. They're a bit pricey (usually about $10 for a bottle), so I always wait for them to go on sale (tip: they have a few sets of full-size bottles, 3 for $15 on their site).

I'm wearing Pop Beauty's Nail Glam in "Baby Blue", a very pretty and opaque light blue shade. I used my nail stamping plates to print scalloped black tips on my nails (generic nail stamping plates and Konad stamper from Amazon).

I was worried that the "Serena" dress I got from Amour Vert would be hard to "dress down" for everyday, but it actually wasn't that hard. I just threw on a cardigan and my favorite boots, and pulled my hair up into a lazy bun (it's really just a ponytail twisted and held with a claw clip in the back).

Simple enough.

Beauty Blurb: Dare to try...red lips!

I never used to be that into lipcolor, but seeing how I'm always going through style/beauty phases, it was only a matter of time. This year, I started playing around more with lipsticks and lipstains in an attempt to be a little more adventurous with my makeup (and red always looks so good on those other bloggers I read about!).

So here's a basic tutorial, as well as a few tips, on how to achieve an easy, bold red lip!

Start with bare lips lightly moisturized with balm.
Carefully line the edges of your lips with a red lipliner (it doesn't have to match your lipstick exactly--just close enough). I'm using Rimmel London's Exaggerate Full Colour Lip Liner Definer in '024 Red Diva'. It's slanted, which makes it easy to line the corners of your lips, as well as the cupid's bow (the little dip above your top lip). I like this color too because I've been able to use it with different shades of red, ranging from blue-reds to more orangey reds. Press your lips together lightly to make sure the lipliner color gets distributed evenly.
Choose a highly pigmented, matte red lipstick. I'm using Maybelline's ColorSensational Lip Color in 'Are You Red-dy' (less than $5 on Amazon right now)--one of my favorites. It's a nice, rich true red. The formula is creamy and stays on pretty well.
Do not apply the lipstick directly to your lips! Instead, use a lip brush (nothing too fancy or anything--I got mine for about $2 at Target) and carefully fill in your lips with the color.
Press your lips together to distribute the color completely and blot with a tissue to remove any excess lipstick. To keep the lipstick from getting onto your teeth (ahh!), simply place your finger inside your mouth like a popsicle and carefully pull it out. Ta-da! Any color that would've ended up on your teeth is now on your finger!
Smile and show off your new red lips. ;D

Be sure to keep the rest of your makeup minimal (I'm just wearing brown eyeliner and mascara) so that your lips stand out.

I don't usually mix prints, but I thought this would make a fun combination!

I'm kind of obsessed with the new Tommy Girl line (Tommy Hilfiger's exclusive juniors line for Macy's). The quality is great, and there are lots of cute, girlie, and preppy items (the yellow button down I'm wearing is from there--got it on sale!). Also: nearly everything has a bow on it (even the logo!), so it's pretty much my idea of fashion perfection right now.

I've been able to get a few items on sale (just got a jacket and top today too), so check your local Macy's often and take advantage of all those coupons and "One Day" sales. And no, this post isn't sponsored, I really am just in love with their things.

It's been hard figuring out what to wear to work when the weather's been so indecisive lately! Cold, warm, windy, and everything in-between, so I try to just play it safe and bring a warm jacket.

Polish Post: Champagne & Bronze French Manicure

A little spin on a classic look!

I felt like wearing a neutral polish but didn't want it to be too plain, so I decided on a French manicure with two shimmer brown-based polishes.

"Shine on" by Urban Decay and a bronze polish by Skinfood

I painted two coats of a champagne shade (Urban Decay's "Shine On") and carefully free-handed the stripe with a bronze color (by Skinfood). The result was a neutral two-tone French mani. Pretty simple enough.

I'm not usually a fan of animal prints, but R&Em's Jessica Hobo Bag is just too cool. I mixed it with a super feminine Dahlia playsuit (it's pink and has little hearts on it!), a fabulous bow belt (one of my newest staples--I've worn it so many times already) and other girlie details (floral tights & shoes) to contrast with the hardness of the studs and bold snakeskin.

Nail polish collaborations I'm excited for

If you follow me on either Facebook or Twitter, you might've seen me mention these already.

I've always been a nail polish addict, but I think it got worse this year. There are just too many pretty shades and finishes that I want to try (glitter! matte! crackle!), as well as some ambitious nail art. It's just a fun, small way to express yourself. With nail art, anything goes.

It's also just too easy to spend money on. Nail polish can typically be anywhere from a couple of bucks to around $10, and is usually justifiable because hey, it's not that expensive (cut to my ever-growing collection of random polishes that have only been used a few times).

So here are the two I'm really excited for...

This collection is available in stores now, and I'm actually really impressed with the shades. The set is made up of really fun glitters (I'm coveting the magically colorful Rainbow Connection), as well as shimmery reds and nudes. It's a good mix.

I'm not sure which shades I'd actually want to wear from this collection (some are a little...drab/sad), and the names are cheesy enough to induce secondhand embarrassment, but the sheer fact that it's inspired by Hunger Games--one of my favorite YA series--is enough to convince me to own a bottle or two. It's set to launch early next year.

These movie-inspired collections always seem a little random, no? (Ahem. Pirates of the Caribbean. Shrek.) I'm still intrigued though.

I've been wearing these boots about as often as I can. I'd wear them everyday if they were completely broken in, but yeah...they're not. They're fairly comfortable, but I'm on my feet most of the day at work. Seven hours in 4-inch tall boots isn't exactly the easiest thing to do (but who cares, because they're really pretty).

It's really weird working at the mall because you're constantly reminded of the next holiday coming up. Suddenly there are red ribbons, garlands, and Santa's Village in the middle of the food court. It makes me feel unprepared for Christmas.

I need to start figuring out what to get everyone.

Beauty Blurb: Sojourn Hair

I've been using Sojourn's shampoo, condition, and monoi oil from their Moisture collection for the past few weeks (I wanted to really get a feel for the products before posting a review). My hair tends to appear/feel dry, especially during the wintertime. I wash and heat style every 2-3 days, but the curling and blow-drying can definitely take a toll on my hair, so I was looking for something that would make my hair look healthier again.

The great thing about Sojourn products is that they're low in pH levels, which basically means that the formulas aren't harsh and won't harm your hair. They're also sulfate free, and don't contain salt, paraben, gluten, formaldehyde, alcohol, or artificial colors (who needs those anyway?).

Pros:

I really like the scent. It's sweet (but not too sweet; a little floral), light, and doesn't linger, so your hair is left feeling clean.
After using the shampoo/conditioner the first couple of times, I noticed that my hair looked and felt healthier. It's definitely softer too.
The monoi oil is amazing! I used it before styling and it added shine.

Cons:

None really. However, since it is a moisturizing shampoo/conditioner, my hair feels a little heavier and gets flatter faster. Use dry shampoo in-between washings to help with volume.

I would definitely recommend Sojourn products! They also have a Smooth, Colour Preserve, and Volume collections, so you can easily find the collection that works the best for your hair.

Polish Post: Black & White Graphic Print Nails

I love the effects that you can do with nail stamping!
It's just a shame that the entire process is a little time-consuming.

For the stamping, I just used a couple of generic nail-stamping plates (I found a set of 25 on Ebay for about $15, but they have several inexpensive sets on Amazon too!).

Santee polish in black and NYC #134 French Tip White

Just two coats of a solid white polish (I used NYC's #134 French Tip White) and a solid black polish for stamping (Santee in black) and finished with a topcoat. Try mixing and matching different prints (I alternated stripes, houndstooth, and polka-dots).

A sweet and simple outfit for a warm day...
right before it got all cold out here.

My new dress from Sway is so bright and colorful! I love the pleating around the skirt. Sway's selection is pretty unique--a little urban, trendy, and cool all rolled into one. Everything is reasonably priced too--most items are under $40, so it's definitely worth a look.

Lastly, my "Zippy" bowler bag from R&Em is my new favorite everyday purse! The size is absolutely perfect--I can fit everything I need (erm. a giant wallet and, like, 3 tubes of lipstick) and then some. I didn't realize how big it was until I started using it everyday and saw that I hadn't even filled it up halfway with all my random stuff. The zipper details add a little edge, and I attached a cute bag charm for a splash of color.

Photo Diary: The Halloween Adventures of the Mouse and the Fox

Me and my awesome co-worker Carlie had the day off for Halloween and decided to do a bunch of random activities. We discovered that Color Me Mine had a Halloween special where if you wear a costume, they waive the studio fee ($10). We were both in the Halloween spirit and itching to paint cutesy decorative pottery things (a.k.a. bisques), so Carlie painted a cupcake, and I painted an ice cream cone.

Our painted bisques will be ready tomorrow. I can't wait to see how they turned out!

Afterwards, we snuck some Chipotle into the movie theatres (shhhh) and watched Paranormal Activity 3.

Kids in horror movies are always creepy.

Me and my friend Yang hadn't seen each other in a while and decided to catch up over dinner. She suggested Bottega Louie in Downtown L.A., so I was really excited because I'd never been (I've been super obsessed with it though, after seeing all those bloggers' pretty photos of macarons. Ahem. Nina).

It was everything I hoped it would be, and more! High ceilings, marble everywhere, little pink boxes, and macarons in every color of the rainbow. Dinner was impressive, gorgeous and delicious. We shared the asparagus herb chicken, some pasta, and truffle fries with dipping sauce (soooo good). It helped that our waiter was super nice and friendly.

If you're ever in Downtown L.A., be sure to check it out. Don't forget to take home some macarons and cupcakes--they have a few unconventional flavors (Earl Grey tea, rose, and a few others). I didn't taste any I didn't like, that's for sure. ;)

Polish Post: Creepy Spiderweb Nails

I wanted to do something in the spirit of Halloween this week, so when I came across Syl and Sam's awesome Spiderweb Nail tutorial, I thought I'd give it a shot.

It's not too hard, but yes, painting stripes with your non-dominant hand can be tricky, so just be patient and do it carefully.

I used a black matte polish (2 coats) and white striper polish for the spiderwebs. I added a fine silver glitter polish over the spiderwebs for sparkle.

I love high heels as much as the next girl, but when your feet need a break, why not step into a pair of flats by Le Bunny Bleu? They're as cute as they are comfortable, and they have synthetic as well as leather options. I'm still obsessed with the ones I got a while ago (and my mom loves the ones she bought too!).

Their Fall/Winter 2011 collection is very impressive--sophisticated and stylish with a touch of quirky. They've added wool boots (most of which are waterproof!) to their usual ballets flats, oxfords, and slip-ons. Polish Post: Matte Nails

I've been intrigued by the matte top coats that have been popular lately, so when I saw that Skin Food had one for $4, I figured, 'Why not?'

I do like the effect. It adds a satin finish to your nails and dries really fast.

The part that sucks: it doesn't last very long. I think my nails only looked matte for about a couple of days before returning to their original shininess. The matte coat faded really fast.

Too bad. I really wanted to like it.

I do want to try this next time though (when I'm feeling a little ambitious):

Essie, China Glaze, and Butter all have matte top coats available. I've heard great things about the Butter one, but it's verrrrry pricey, so I'm not sure if it's quite worth it.

I had the opportunity to attend a special blogger luncheon hosted by 2b. You might remember hearing about 2b back when I participated in their Fashion Showdown in May (my team won!).

It was great catching up with some of my blogger buddies (and meeting new ones), as well as meeting the 2b team and hearing about the things they have in store for the future.

After lunch at The Farm, we walked down the street to visit 2b's Beverly Hills location for a fun Style-Off! We each got a blank mannequin to start with and were instructed to dress it in an outfit inspired by 2b and our personal style. I think a lot of us got easily distracted by all the clothes and accessories in the store! Not only are their clothes cute and trendy, but they're very affordable too.

Polish Post: Frosty Pastel Rainbow Nails

For the indecisive.
I've been into pretty pastel shades lately and wanted an excuse to try my new lavender blue Milk Creamy Nail polish ($5) from Skin Food, but was too lazy to do any stamping or fancy designs.

So I decided on rainbow nails.

I used sheer shimmer polish to make them look frosted, but they look fine plain too! Have fun experimenting with mixing and matching shades.

Get the look: Pick 5 different solid-colored opaque pastel nail polishes and paint each nail with 2 coats (or until completely opaque) and let dry, then paint a sheer shimmer polish polish over each nail as well (1-2 coats). Finish with a topcoat.

Here are the polishes I used on each nail (from left to right). Some are discontinued, but I'm sure you can find similar (or even prettier!) shades to substitute.

I think it's fun to have knee-highs and knee socks with shorts or skirts, but it's a pain when they slip down your knees and get all slouchy. I bought these sheer black tights from Ebay, and it's cool because they're made to look like lace knee-highs (and they come in white too!). I'm thinking of also maybe getting some of those tights with the faux bow garters from Asos to wear with my black dresses at work when it starts to get colder outside.

The Year of Adventurous Shoes: Bunnies & Bows

Earlier this week, Kelsi tweeted about some cute new shoes she bought.

...And somehow I ended up with three pairs in my shopping cart and on my doorstep (hey, I just found out I got promoted at work again, so I might as well reward myself). ;)

Ohhh Le Bunny Bleu, how did I not know about you?

I've been looking for comfortable, colorful, and cute flats to wear with my neutral colored outfits at work (shoes are a bit of a free-for-all, so long as I'm not wearing anything casual, like sneakers or flip-flops), and Le Bunny Bleu seemed to be the perfect option!

Le Bunny Bleu specializes in quirky, romantic, vintage-inspired flats. I liked that they had synthetic and real leather options in a wide range of colors and styles. They're cushioned and have thick soles, so they seem like they'll hold up for a long time (which is great, because I'm on my feet all day!). Each pair came in a sky blue box, with a dust bag and small packet of...oil blotting papers for your face? Okay, weird but cool. I needed those anyway, I guess.

Only thing to watch out for: sizing is a little inconsistent, so pay plenty attention to the descriptions! Most styles run a little small. If you're between sizes, you might want to size up (I'm usually between 7.5 and 8, and got them in 8. One fit fine, but two were a little snug, but still wearable).

Beauty Blurb: Too Faced's Size Queen Mascara

I rely heavily on reviews and Sephora testing/sampling for beauty products, but sometimes I buy random things on a whim because I'm curious (or the packaging is reeeeally nice). I've been trying new products lately and going on mini beauty binges, so I thought it might be helpful to share some of my experiences with you.

Anyway, I had 10 minutes left on my lunch break, so I ran into Sephora and started frantically searching for mascara because I was running out and wanted to try a new one. Any mascara. Any new mascara that promised volume and wasn't waterproof. For some reason, this was the one time that I couldn't find a salesperson to help me (even though they always seem to be there every time I don't need them), so I grabbed the prettiest one I could find after I saw that Benefit's They're Real mascara was sold out:

The bottle itself is bigger than your average mascara, as well as the brush. It promises to curl, lengthen, thicken, and volumize your lashes with its giant corkscrew brush.

What I liked: The formula's pretty good. It's really black, lasts all day and doesn't flake. After a bit of practice, it can create dramatic doll-like lashes. It really does add a good amount of volume and length, and lashes are flexible and soft.

What I didn't like: Ginormous brush is ginormous. There's a bit of a learning curve when you first use it because the brush is just that large! There's plenty of potential for eye pokage and smudges near your eye, so be careful when maneuvering it. It grabbed my top eyelashes easily, but I had trouble using it on my bottom lashes, and it doesn't seem to curl much. Also, if you apply more than two coats it can get a little spider-y and clumpy.

Verdict: It's good, but I wouldn't buy it again. Too difficult to get results, and the brush is frighteningly big.

Still hunting for the perfect mascara.

Pop Beauty Nail Glam in Gold Glitz and Pink Glitz

I couldn't quite decide on which of my new polishes to try...so I tried both! I bought them on sale for $5/each on Ulta.

Pop Beauty's Nail Glam is one of my favorite polish brands--especially the glitters. Two to three coats and it's completely opaque and all sparkle. I want to get some of their other solid colors next time. They come in lots of pretty bright shades.

I usually post these nail photos on my Facebook, but I think I'll start posting them here too. I like DIY nail art and manicures, so look out for more posts (maybe even a few tutorials and reviews) in the future! :)

Another work outfit. I'm just really excited that I got to wear my new Dahlia dress from Asos, my new favorite place to shop (even though it's overseas and shipping takes a bit longer. Worth it).

I've also been experimenting with up-dos in an attempt to look more put-together. I actually like how the Dutch braid thing worked out! My bangs are growing out right now, so I just combed them back. If you need a tutorial, try Keiko Lynn's (which I used). It's really easy and good for day-after hair, or when you don't have much time to style it in the morning.

Also: this has been stuck in my head lately. I <3 Kate Nash. Enjoy!

I might just start posting work outfits more because I don't have many days off, but it's okay. I think having limits will really challenge me--I'll have to see just how creative I can get within reason! We're allowed to wear black, white, gray, and brown, and nothing too casual. I really miss being able to wear colors, but I make up for that with unconventional nail polish colors, accessories, and shoes.

Just because there's a dress code doesn't mean you have to be boring.

Misikko HANA Flat Iron 1.5": Review

I am not the type of girl that spends hours doing her hair. I'll probably do a quick blow-dry with a round brush or curl it a little bit, but other than that, I don't usually like spending too much time on my hair.

I've always had issues using hair straighteners on myself and would get impatient easily. Even though my hair is naturally straight-ish (it's a little wavy), I could never quite replicate the straight styles at the salons. So when Misikko approached me for a product review, I thought I'd give it a shot.

I got to try the HANA Professional Flat Iron (1.5"). The first thing I noticed was the perfect packaging (and it arrived FAST--a couple of days after the shipping confirmation). The flat iron even comes with a travel pouch a heat-proof pad so you won't burn your counter (yay!).

The instructions were pretty straightforward. There are different temperature settings ranging from 140ºf-450ºf, and the instructional booklet recommended certain ones depending on your hair type. I used mine on 302ºf, a medium setting (my hair is naturally just a little wavy, so I didn't need to use a higher setting).

I liked that it was really easy to use--I was able to straighten my hair pretty fast. Also, the other straighteners I've used left my hair kind of dry and frizzy, but this one actually left mine soft and shiny. It didn't even leave any static, which is something I usually suffer from with other flat irons.

All in all, it's a great flat iron! I'm excited to try different straight styles in the future and will let you know how that goes.

And if anyone can refer me to a good tutorial on using straighteners to curl your hair--something I just can't seem to master--please do! :)

Life's been pretty good lately. I got promoted at work (yay!!!) and have been keeping myself busy. I'm glad that I like this job (totally beats my last job) and it's nice being surrounded by pretty white dresses all day (I work at a bridal salon). Plus, me and my new co-worker get along pretty well (and she has a fashion blog too!).

The ring my sister got for me for my birthday (back in June!) finally came in and I was really excited to wear it. I have a weird love for cute animal jewelry (especially when bunnies are involved).

Just sharing a couple of my recent shoe purchases. They're a little unconventional, but still definitely wearable (hey, I'm trying to expand my shoe horizons). I'm not allowed to wear colors at work (just black, white, brown, and gray), but shoes are a bit of a free-for-all, as long as they're not flip-flops. So I think I'll make up for the lack of color in outfits, with some quirky, colorful shoes.

I love these shoes. Love, love, LOVE. They're surprisingly comfortable and all the little details are so adorable! From the embroidered scottie dog and leash to the contrast whipstitching--even the white rabbits in teapots printed on the sole--Irregular Choice is a new favorite. I've been a fan for a while now (from afar) and this is my first pair, but it's certainly not my last! Their shoes are so unique and well-made. Only con? They seem to run a little large. Order a half-size down.

Nectarine flats in blue and yellow - Bought from DSW in store, buy $44.99 on Swell

I first saw these at Kitson but couldn't justify spending almost $60 on faux patent leather shoes. That didn't matter though because I found them at the DSW in Pasadena on sale for about $25 (yay!). Not for the timid, the colors are bright and happy (and there are bows on the toes!). I can't wait to wear them, although they need some breaking in.

From Summer to Fall: Military Dress

I kept the accessories to a minimum (mostly because it's still really hot outside), but added a floppy hat to keep the sun out of my face. I also wore some open toe white flats from Payless.

The military/nautical trend is still pretty popular next season, so this dress works perfectly (especially in the dark navy). To make any summer dress ready for fall, try layering with a bomber or motorcycle jacket, and add dark neutral accessories and shoes (I used a black cloche hat and boots). You can even wear tights or knee socks if it's colder outside.

From Day to Night: Trouser Jeans

The wide leg trend is back, and the good thing is it can be dressed up and dressed down! Fitted slightly throughout the hip and thighs, these jeans are flattering, extremely comfortable (but the 33" inseam is a little long for my 5'4" height. I need to hem them) and a little dressy. For this post, I'll show you how trouser jeans can be worn during the day, as well as night.

I added a strand of chunky faux pearls to feminize the outfit a little bit, and a vintage portfolio that my mom gave me.

And don't worry: the jeans are comfy enough to dance in.

Vanity is a national specialty retailer that can be found in your local shopping mall (or if you don't live near one, online!). They have tons of cute and trendy items that also happen to be very affordable. I like that they have a wide variety of jeans that come in different cuts, washes, and inseams--which is especially important because I'm sure lots of you also struggle with finding jeans that are the perfect fit, as well as the perfect length.
