Beauty Box 5 Review: January 2015

Beauty Box 5 is a subscription service that delivers a mix of five full-size and sample beauty products to your door every month for just $12. They aim to introduce customers to new brands and products, including some that are niche, luxury, and eco-friendly. It's a great way to discover new beauty faves!

Here's my first Beauty Box 5 of the year! They included a couple of basic shower products and some fun makeup to try out. There was only one brand I hadn't heard of before (Ultraflesh), so I was looking forward to using it. On to the reviews...

Beauty Box 5 Review: January 2015 (c/o)
  1. Softsoap - Nutri Serums Vitamin E Body Wash - Lightly scented and lathers nicely--it's a decent body wash that does its job. No complaints.
  2. Sally Hansen - Salon Effects - My favorite item in the box! It was my first time trying these and I was surprised at how easy it was to apply. They're dry nail polish strips (not fake nails!) that you peel and stick onto your natural nails. They even smell like regular nail polish out of the box and can be removed with acetone. Each kit comes with all the tools you need and simple instructions to follow, and there's an awesome assortment of fun patterns (mine was a fishnet design). Sure it's a little tricky at first, but once you get the first couple of nails or so, the rest are easy peasy. Plus, if you keep your nails short, you can get two uses out of each strip (I realized this too late and threw out the excess. Oops).  Just be sure to press them really good around your cuticles or they might get caught in your hair and peel when you shower! I want to buy some more of these (specifically, the pink argyle and "Love Letter" prints) because I haven't had as much time to do my own nail art and I still want them to look pretty. Tip: check eBay! ;)
  3. Ultraflesh - The Gold Standard Mascara in Blackout - This mascara felt a little dry and wasn't as dramatic as I hoped. The formula itself is great if you're looking to define your lashes and add a little volume. It's more ideal for a natural look. The brush separates lashes wonderfully and I didn't have any clumps or smudging throughout the day.
  4. Coastal Scents - Eye Shadow in Nude, Amber Bronze, Platinum Blue, Opal Black - It's no wonder their giant shadow palettes are counted among beauty bloggers and vloggers' favorites. These shadows are pigmented with a little shimmer, and they go on so smoothly! I can't comment on staying power or creasing though, because I wore them with primer. All in all, I love the texture and they look awesome on. Swatches below.  The nude shade blends in with my skin, but it has a lovely subtle shimmer that's perfect for highlighting.
  5. Garnier Fructis - Daily Care Fortifying Shampoo - I thought it was a little strange that they included one without the other (no conditioner?) but luckily I had a random sample of another conditioner to try out anyway. It smells good and my hair felt super clean afterwards. I just wish it was sulfate free.
