Beauty Box 5 Review: June 2014

Beauty Box 5 is a subscription service that delivers a mix of five full-size and sample beauty products to your door every month for just $12. They aim to introduce customers to new brands and products, including some that are niche, luxury, and eco-friendly. It's a great way to discover new beauty faves!

This month, I was happy to see that most of the brands I was introduced to have products that are free of parabens and sulfates. I switched to sulfate-free shampoos/hair cleansers a couple of years ago and my hair has never been healthier (sulfates can strip your hair of its natural oils and dry it out). It feels so wonderful when you can use beauty products that are a little better for you and your body. Here's what I got in my Beauty Box 5 June box:

  1. Vita Bath - Body Wash in "Fanatic Wild Cherry" - Free of mineral oils and silicone, and packed with antioxidants. The one I tried had a light cherry scent that wasn't overwhelming and didn't stick after washing (good--I don't like it when my body wash's scent mixes with my moisturizer's). I was impressed at how well it lathered because it's sulfate-free (yay!).
  2. Eslor - Introductory Collection Calming Kit - Included samples of the soothing refiner & cleanser, replenishing scrub, comforting mask, and soothing cream. The cleanser and scrub left my face feeling fresh without drying it out. The absolute winners (definitely splurge-worthy) in this set were the comforting mask (left my face feeling so soft and smooth) and the soothing cream (super hydrating, but feels really light). This line is a little pricey, but if you have dry/combo skin like me and are looking for some higher end face products that moisturize extremely well without weighing your face down, these would be perfect.
  3. Glam Natural  - Mascara in black - Made for sensitive eyes, this paraben-free, hypoallergenic mascara is vegan friendly. It's perfect if you want defined, natural looking lashes (see below). It doesn't run/smudge and washes off easily with some face wash.
  4. Nicka K New York - Nail Color in "Red Hot" - Very glossy nail color that's opaque in two coats. It applied evenly and smoothly, and dried fast too. However, I wasn't a fan of the brush. I liked that it had a flat shape, but the bristles were a bit thick and it was hard to create clean edges around the cuticles. The red is a deep, true red that should work with most skintones (see below).
  5. Organix - Coconut Water Shampoo & Conditioner - Smells like a dreamy beach vacation. This sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner left my hair feeling squeaky clean (no, really!) and soft. It was amazing how light my hair felt after I dried and styled it, too. I'm going to buy this once I run out of my current shampoo/conditioner--the $7.99 price tag isn't bad at all!
