Hello Kitty Cafe Truck in Valencia - Macarons and Petit Fours

I was bummed when I couldn't make it to the Hello Kitty Cafe Truck when it stopped in Glendale, so you can imagine how excited I was when it came to my hometown.

The promise of tiny cute food served in a bright pink food truck was too good to resist.

I invited Tamara, a fellow Hello Kitty fan. The line was surprisingly short and fast. Ordering was quick and easy (I got the macarons and petit fours). Yeah, the food is a little pricey (as expected), but they were actually quite good! The macarons are pre-boxed with five different flavors (look at the Little Twin Stars detail below; the others are adorned with bows), and the petit fours are four different cake flavors.

I really enjoyed the macarons because they tasted just like traditional ones--not too sweet with just the right amount of flavor. They were light and perfectly crisp. The petit fours were a little too sweet for me though, and a couple of them tasted too much like marzipan, which I'm not a huge fan of. Overall, I thought the desserts were beautifully hand-decorated and pretty good. Definitely the prettiest food I've had in a while.

I was amazed at how much thought they put into all the details, from the packaging to the servers and their costumes, to the license plate on the back of the van. No detail went unnoticed.

There were also sugar cookies, bow headbands, t-shirts, mugs, and other merch available too. A few of the things on the menu were already sold out or unavailable though.

Review: I Tried Sun Basket's Organic Meal Delivery Kit!

Sweets and Hearts Review: I Tried Sunbasket's Organic Meal Delivery Kit!
Sun Basket Review: Organic Meal Delivery Kit (c/o, disclosure)

Here's the thing: I actually enjoy cooking but...

a. I don't have the time (and/or am lazy occasionally). I have a long commute, so by the time I get home from work, It's late and I'm already hungry. Sometimes I end up making or eating (fast food!) the same thing over and over again, and that gets boring.
b. I usually don't cook much and tend to have a lot of produce/ingredients left over when I do. I try to use excess produce for other things, but that's not always possible. Grocery shopping can be overwhelming if you need only small amounts of something,

If you live along the west coast, an amazing solution to get you out of your cooking rut is Sun Basket. It's a subscription based weekly meal delivery kit filled with everything you need to make three delicious organic meals. Ingredients are sourced from local farms, so you're guaranteed to get the freshest produce available.

First Impressions:

I got my box on a Tuesday, with all the things I needed to make three meals for two people (six meals total). They send you a big box filled with recipe cards, instructions, and meals grouped in labeled bags (be sure to check the cardboard under the bags for the meat and/or seafood items).

Everything is clearly labeled and pre-measured to make preparing even easier (nothing goes to waste). Plus, most meals take around a half hour to make! I went with meat and seafood dishes, but they have other options to choose from, including gluten-free, vegetarian, and paleo.

I really liked that I got to work with a few ingredients I'd never heard of or cooked before (am I the only one who didn't know what a sunchoke was?). I even learned a few new simple techniques that added dimension to the already creative dishes, such as toasting coriander seeds, making turkey meatballs from scratch, or even using a food processor to turn cauliflower into couscous.

Here's what came in the Chicken with Carmelized Orange and Roasted Vegetables bag (pictured without the raw chicken it included):

Here's the finished result:

Sunbasket: Middle Eastern Meatballs with Cauliflower Couscous
Sun Basket: Chicken with Carmelized Orange and Roasted Vegetables - After

I was extremely happy with all of the meals I picked out. Each one was flavorful and easy to make. Also, the proportions are very generous and filling--I had some leftovers that I was able to bring to work the next day.

Here are the two other dishes I made. Don't they look delicious? The turkey meatballs with cauliflower couscous were my favorite in the bunch! Very tasty.

Sun Basket is perfect if you...

  • think grocery shopping is daunting
  • want to try new and different dishes
  • enjoy cooking, but hate the tedious preparation
  • like supporting local farms
  • prefer to eat organic and seasonal ingredients
  • live in the west coast

What you need to know...

  • It's under $12 for each meal, starting at three meals for two people per week (about $70). That may seem a bit pricey, but considering how much takeout can be, it's a great deal!
  • Shipping is free and they have a wonderful recycling program where you can send packaging materials back at no charge.
  • Skip weeks or cancel whenever you want!
  • There's a "use/freeze by" date on the meat/seafood and produce arrives fresh, so it makes sense to plan on cooking the meals within a few days of receiving.
  • Ingredients include non–GMO produce, responsibly-raised, hormone-free meats and sustainably-sourced seafood. Everything is extremely fresh!
  • Delivery is available in CA, OR, WA, NV, CO, ID, AZ and UT

The only thing I had an issue with was the amount of time it took to cook one of the dishes. It said it should take around 40 minutes, but it took me over an hour. However, I'm not the most skilled in the kitchen (slow at chopping) so I'm pretty sure that's the main reason. But hey, I was still able to make the dishes successfully, even if it may have taken me a bit longer. Don't be scared if you're a kitchen newbie!

Overall, the concept is simple but revolutionary. It has given me a whole new outlook on cooking. I love how Sun Basket takes the guesswork out of making a healthy, delicious, easy--and yes, impressive--meal! I had never thought of trying to make my own pad thai or Middle Eastern meatballs before. Cooking doesn't have to be so intimidating, difficult, or boring.

Merry Merry | Holiday Style - Vintage Fur Sequin Cardigan

Sweets & Hearts holiday fashion and style: outfit featuring thrifted vintage mink fur collar sequin cardigan, black and gold striped skirt, Betsey johnson tights, ankle boots

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season!

Here's what I wore to see the The Nutcracker ballet in Pasadena with my best friend. I usually watch it on TV on Christmas day, but seeing it live was even better. Hopefully we can make a tradition out of it. The rest of my Christmas week was filled with lots and lots of food and family. But mostly food.

I found this vintage sequin cardigan with a mink fur collar (circa 1950's/60's)--it's so glamorous and easily one of my favorite Goodwill finds! I paired it with a black and gold striped skirt (my Secret Santa present from Marisa last year), crocheted tights, black ankle boots, and a thrifted quilted crossbody bag. It made for a festive holiday outfit.
